Notes on designing TwinThrust: the decisions, the ones that were wrong, and what three chapters have in common under the paint.
_process cost me three weeksA 4x boost fired huge flames and added no speed at all. It looked like a tuning problem, so I tuned it, and nothing happened. The bug was which function the code ran in.
They did not read a word, flew straight off into empty sky, and were right to. What is obvious to the person who built the game is obvious to nobody else.
It began as a level pack with no plot at all. The fix was not to write a story into the levels, but to find the reading that made them evidence for one.
Three chapters that look nothing alike, built from the same ten hazard scripts. Why that is a design decision rather than a shortcut, and where it stops working.
More coming: what a fuel gauge does to a level that was designed without one, and why every level gets exactly one new idea.
